The Moldavian kaval is a Romanian shepherd fipple flute.
Unlike the Bulgarian ore Macedonian Kaval that are rim blown flutes, the Moldavian kaval is easy to learn because the sound is produced by a fipple and no difficult embouchure is needed.
The only special embouchure that is used on this flute is by placing the lower lip slightely over the top of the soundwindow, creating the typical harsh rich and haunting sound.
